From Real Madrid academy to Olympic gold with Spain
In short: Born in June 2003, Pablo Barrios has rapidly ascended through the ranks of Spanish football. After switching from Real Madrid to Atlético Madrid in 2017, the midfielder has transitioned from youth prospect to a vital component of Diego Simeone's first-team squad.
Barrios's rise is defined by his rapid progression through the Atlético Madrid hierarchy. After joining the club in 2017, he became a standout performer for the under-19 side during the 2021–22 season, helping them reach the UEFA Youth League semi-finals for the first time. His professional journey accelerated quickly; he signed his first professional contract on 3 March 2022, which originally ran until 2025. By the 2022–23 season, he had already made his La Liga debut on 29 October, appearing as a substitute against Cádiz CF.
His impact in the Copa del Rey was immediate, scoring his first goals for the club in late 2022 and early 2023 against CD Arenteiro and Oviedo. This momentum led to a contract renewal in January 2023, securing his place until 2028 and earning him the number 24 jersey. His importance to the squad was further cemented following the departure of Saúl in the 2024–25 season, when he was handed the prestigious number 8 jersey and became a regular starter under manager Diego Simeone.
On the international stage, Barrios has achieved significant milestones. He was a member of the Spain under-23 squad that secured a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. His rapid ascent culminated in a senior international call-up in November 2024, following injuries to teammates Martín Zubimendi and Álex Baena. He made his senior debut for Spain on 18 November 2024 during a UEFA Nations League A match against Switzerland.
