From Madrid academy prodigy to a €20 million move to Naples
In short: In 2017, José Mourinho was already scouting this 16-year-old talent. Today, Miguel Gutiérrez has transitioned from a Real Madrid prospect to a key figure in European football, navigating high-stakes transfers and international gold medals.
Born in Pinto, Spain, on 27 July 2001, Miguel Gutiérrez Ortega’s ascent through the ranks of Spanish football began in the Getafe academy before he moved to Real Madrid in 2011. His potential was evident early; in July 2017, then-Manchester United manager José Mourinho expressed interest in signing the teenager, though Gutiérrez chose to remain in Madrid.
His breakthrough at the professional level arrived under the stewardship of Zinedine Zidane. Following an injury to Ferland Mendy, Gutiérrez was called up to the first team for the 2019 Audi Cup, becoming the first player from the Real Madrid training center born in 2001 to reach the senior squad. He officially made his professional debut on 21 April 2021, appearing as a substitute in a 3–0 victory against Cádiz, followed by his first start against Granada on 15 May 2021.
The latter part of his career has been defined by significant moves and international success. In August 2022, he joined Girona on a contract lasting until June 2027, a deal that notably allowed Real Madrid to retain 50% of his rights. During his time with Girona, he contributed to historic moments, such as the club's first-ever win against Barcelona in December 2023. On the international stage, Gutiérrez has secured major honors, winning the 2019 UEFA European Under-19 Championship in Armenia and earning a gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
His trajectory reached a new milestone on 19 August 2025, when he joined the Italian Serie A side Napoli. The transfer involved a reported fee of €20,000,000 and a five-year contract, marking his arrival as a significant figure in one of Europe's most prestigious leagues.
