From Real Madrid legend to Bundesliga newcomer: the remarkable journey of Lucas Vázquez
In short: After a decade of defining success at Real Madrid, one of football's most decorated utility players has embarked on a new chapter. Discover how a player who bypassed the Spanish youth national teams rose to claim 23 major trophies and a new life in Germany.
Lucas Vázquez's ascent is a testament to perseverance within the world's most demanding footballing ecosystem. Arriving at Real Madrid's youth academy in 2007 at just 16 years old, the Galician-born winger spent years navigating the club's hierarchy. His path was not a straight line to stardom; he spent the 2014–15 season on loan at Espanyol, where he proved his worth in La Liga, scoring his first top-flight goal against Real Sociedad in October 2014. Real Madrid eventually exercised a buyback clause in June 2015 to bring him home.
Once reintegrated, Vázquez became a vital component of a golden era. His trophy cabinet is immense, boasting 23 major titles, including four La Liga championships and five UEFA Champions League trophies. He played a pivotal role in several historic campaigns, such as the 2015–16 Champions League victory, where he famously converted a penalty during the shootout against Atlético Madrid. His versatility allowed him to operate effectively as both a right-back and a winger, providing stability during periods of injury, such as his 2021 recovery from a significant posterior cruciate ligament injury.
Despite his club success, Vázquez's international story is unique. He never represented Spain at any youth level, yet he earned places in the senior squads for Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup. After reaching the 400-match milestone for Real Madrid in May 2025, he ended a ten-year tenure with the club. In the summer of 2025, he transitioned to the Bundesliga, joining Bayer Leverkusen as a free agent—a move that marks the beginning of a new era for the veteran professional.
