In short: In 2013, Russ Faria was sentenced to life for the brutal stabbing of his wife, Betsy. But behind the prosecution's narrative lay a web of forged signatures, withheld evidence, and a mysterious beneficiary who stood to gain everything.

The 2011 murder of Betsy Faria, who was dying of terminal cancer, initially led to the conviction of her husband, Russ Faria. The prosecution's case relied heavily on the testimony of Pamela Hupp, a former coworker of Betsy's. Hupp claimed Russ had a violent temper and suggested he was responsible for the 55 stab wounds found on Betsy's body. However, the trial was marred by significant irregularities, including the withholding of evidence that implicated Hupp—the sole beneficiary of Betsy's $150,000 State Farm life insurance policy—as a potential killer.

The investigation into Hupp's involvement revealed a pattern of deception. While Hupp claimed she intended to place $100,000 of the insurance proceeds into a trust for Betsy's daughters, a 2014 deposition revealed she had kept the money. Furthermore, evidence emerged that a document on Betsy's laptop, which appeared to express fear of her husband, was written in an outdated version of Microsoft Word that was not even installed on the computer. After a successful appeal and a second trial in 2015, Russ Faria was exonerated when his defense was permitted to present evidence that pointed toward Hupp.

Hupp's legal troubles extended beyond the Faria case. In 2016, she entered an Alford plea for the murder of Louis Gumpenberger, a disabled man she had lured into her home and shot. While she claimed self-defense, law enforcement believed she staged the killing to frame Russ Faria. Her history also includes investigations into the 2013 death of her mother, Shirley Neumann, which was later reclassified from an accident to an 'undetermined' cause of death. Despite the mounting evidence, Hupp remains a central figure in ongoing legal scrutiny regarding the Faria homicide.
