In this Texas town, graduating seniors risk everything for a chance to escape poverty
In short: In the small town of Carp, Texas, graduating seniors compete in a dangerous, secret game called Panic. The stakes are high: a $50,000 prize that offers a rare ticket out of their bleak circumstances. But as the challenges escalate, players must confront their deepest fears to survive the competition.
Created by Lauren Oliver and based on her 2014 novel, the teen drama Panic premiered on Amazon Prime Video on May 28, 2021. The narrative centers on 23 recent high school graduates who participate in a series of perilous tasks designed by two clandestine judges. The competition is intended to force participants to face their most profound anxieties, with the ultimate winner receiving a cash prize of $50,000. This financial reward is framed as a life-altering opportunity for the youth of Carp to escape their small-town environment.
The series features a complex web of characters, including Heather Nill, who enters the competition after her mother spends her college tuition, and Dodge Mason, a newcomer to the town. The game is deeply embedded in the local culture, with legacy participants like Ray Hall and the watchful presence of local authorities, such as Sheriff James Cortez, whose own son died in a previous year's iteration of the contest. The show explores the social dynamics of the town, contrasting the struggles of those in trailer homes with the relative wealth of characters like Bishop Moore.
Development of the project began in June 2018, with a series order confirmed by Amazon in May 2019. Filming for the full series took place in the Austin, Texas area starting in late 2019. Despite the release of a ten-episode season and a companion audio novella, Panic: Ghosts and Legends, the series was canceled in August 2021. Critical reception was mixed, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 65% approval rating, noting that while the premise is often preposterous, the show remains consistently entertaining.
