In short: In the world of Pandora Hearts, existence itself is a crime. When a young heir is banished into a nightmarish dimension called the Abyss, he discovers a truth that spans centuries: history is not just written by the winners, but by those willing to sacrifice their very souls to rewrite it.

The narrative centers on Oz Vessalius, who is cast into the Abyss by the Baskervilles—a mysterious group that deems his life a sin. This otherworldly dimension is populated by 'Chains,' monstrous entities that Oz learns to control by consuming their blood. Central to this conflict is the Tragedy of Sablier, a historical cataclysm where the city of Sablier was swallowed by the Abyss. This event led to the formation of Pandora, a clandestine organization dedicated to researching the Abyss and its 'Intention,' the dimension's ruler.

The story reveals a complex web of manipulation involving Jack Vessalius, a legendary hero who founded Pandora. While initially seen as a savior, Jack is revealed to have orchestrated the Tragedy of Sablier to reunite with Lacie, the sister of the Baskerville leader Glen. Jack even used the Core of the Abyss to bring a black rabbit doll to life, transforming it into the monster B-Rabbit—which eventually becomes Oz's true nature. This cycle of tragedy involves the fragmentation of Glen's soul into five pieces, which various factions seek to collect or destroy.

Ultimately, the series explores the heavy cost of altering reality. To save the world, Oz and his allies must confront the Core of the Abyss and the villain Oswald. The resolution requires Oz and Alice to sacrifice themselves to sever the Intention's bond with the world. The narrative concludes with a century-long wait for reincarnation, highlighting a theme of enduring grief and the permanence of sacrifice in the face of historical tragedy.
