Marvel's mysterious mercenary Paladin was inspired by a 1950s television gunfighter
In short: Created by Jim Shooter and Carmine Infantino, the enigmatic mercenary known as Paladin debuted in 1978. While he often clashes with superheroes over his refusal to work for free, this skilled combatant balances his cold, profit-driven nature with a surprising, albeit selective, sense of honor.
First appearing in Daredevil #150 in January 1978, Paladin is a private investigator and mercenary whose true identity remains unrevealed, though he frequently uses the name Paul Denning. His character was directly inspired by the protagonist of the 1950s Western television series Have Gun – Will Travel, who similarly traveled the Old West solving problems for a fee. Paladin possesses superhuman physical attributes, including strength, stamina, and agility, alongside mastery in various martial arts like judo and taekwondo.
Paladin’s career is defined by his mercenary ethos, which often puts him at odds with altruistic heroes. He famously laughed at Spider-Man for offering his services without charge, and he has served various organizations, including the Wild Pack, the Thunderbolts, and the Serpent Society. Despite his greed, he has demonstrated a unique moral code; in one instance, he fulfilled a contract to assist rebels by planting a bomb at a government facility, only detonating it after the rebels were safely captured because the explosion was not part of his original fee.
His history is marked by high-stakes betrayals and complex alliances. During the Civil War storyline, he infiltrated the Heroes for Hire to hunt Captain America for S.H.I.E.L.D., nearly succeeding by using a specialized nerve-gas weapon before being thwarted by Shang-Chi. Later, he joined Norman Osborn’s Thunderbolts, accepting an 82-million-dollar contract to assassinate Elektra. Though he failed, he eventually aided her escape. Paladin remains a fixture of the Marvel Universe, with a live-action debut scheduled for the 2026 miniseries VisionQuest, where he will be portrayed by Todd Stashwick.
