Can an algorithm actually find your soulmate or just a script?
In short: In a world where we outsource our dating to code, one North Indian man tries to outsmart his father by using an AI app to find 'The One.' What follows is a high-budget collision of Delhi wealth and Kerala tradition that sparked both cinematic praise and cultural controversy.
Param Sundari (2025) explores the modern tension between technological convenience and human connection. The narrative centers on Param, a wealthy Delhiite who uses an advanced app called Soulmates to find a perfect match. This digital search leads him to Sundari, a woman from Kerala who manages her ancestral family home, or Tharavad. While the film aims to explore how today's generation relies on algorithms over intuition, critics were divided on whether the execution felt like a sincere exploration of technology or a tired cinematic trope.
The production was a massive undertaking by Maddock Films, featuring lead actors Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor. The project moved from development in November 2024 to an official announcement in December 2024. Despite its high production value—noted for its cinematography of Kerala’s landscapes and a soundtrack by Sachin–Jigar—the film faced significant backlash for its portrayal of Malayali people. Critics labeled the treatment as 'old wine in a new bottle,' arguing that it relied on flat comedy to bridge the North-South Indian cultural divide.
The film's reception serves as a case study in 'comfort food cinema.' While some reviewers praised it as a breezy, light-hearted watch with a chartbuster soundtrack (specifically the song 'Pardesiya'), others dismissed it as an unoriginal disaster that lacked chemistry between its leads. It opened to a worldwide gross of ₹10.36 crore on August 29, 2025, but ultimately received mixed-to-negative reviews, with some outlets rating it as low as 0.5 out of 5 stars for failing to evoke genuine emotion despite its technological premise.
