Pat Narduzzi's ascent in college football was defined by his ability to build elite defensive units. After starting his coaching journey as a graduate assistant at Miami University in 1990, he spent years refining his craft across various programs, including the University of Rhode Island and Northern Illinois University. His reputation as a premier defensive strategist was solidified during his tenure as defensive coordinator at Michigan State University.
At Michigan State, Narduzzi was brought in by Mark Dantonio to revitalize a depleted defense. The results were significant: between 2011 and 2014, the Spartans were the only FBS team to rank in the Top 10 in both total defense and rushing defense. This success earned him the Broyles Award in 2013, an honor recognizing the nation's top assistant coach. His final game with the Spartans included a 20-point fourth-quarter rally to win the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.
In 2015, Narduzzi took over as the head coach at the University of Pittsburgh. His tenure has been marked by significant milestones, including leading the team to an ACC Championship victory and a Peach Bowl appearance in 2021. Following a 2026 win against Syracuse, he overtook Hall of Famer Jock Sutherland to hold the school record for games coached, totaling 144 appearances. He currently sits second on Pitt's all-time wins list, having moved past Pop Warner following a victory over Miami.
