The architect of elite quarterback development and high-scoring offenses
In short: From the Michigan State Spartans to the NFL sidelines, Pat Shurmur has built a career on unlocking talent. Known for transforming quarterbacks like Donovan McNabb and Sam Bradford, his strategic influence has shaped some of the most prolific passing attacks in football history.
Pat Shurmur's career is defined by a specialized ability to mentor young quarterbacks. During his tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles, he helped develop Donovan McNabb into the most prolific passer in franchise history, including a 2004 season that led to the team's first Super Bowl appearance since 1980. This knack for development was later seen with Sam Bradford in 2010, who won the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year after setting records for consecutive completions and passes without an interception. His success with Bradford was bolstered by the player's immediate impact as a rookie. This development helped the Rams achieve one of the league's most significant turnarounds.
Shurmur's coaching journey spans over three decades, including 21 seasons in the NFL. His experience includes serving as a head coach for the Cleveland Browns from 2011 to 2012 and the New York Giants from 2018 to 2019. He also held the role of interim head coach for the Philadelphia Eagles at the end of the 2015 season, leading them to a 35–30 victory over the Giants. His coaching lineage includes his uncle, Fritz Shurmur, a long-time NFL coach. Fritz notably served as the defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers.
Beyond the NFL, Shurmur has made a significant impact in collegiate football. At the University of Colorado, he transitioned from an offensive analyst to the sole offensive coordinator for the 2024 season. Guided by him, the Buffaloes secured a 9–3 record and an Alamo Bowl appearance, their first nine-win campaign since 2016. His tenure in Colorado was highlighted by breakout performances from Shedeur Sanders and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter. The Buffaloes' recent success was marked by an improved scoring efficiency. This rise saw the team climb from 60th to 31st in total offensive rankings.
