In short: In 1956, Paul Hornung achieved a feat unmatched in college football history. Despite playing for a Notre Dame squad that finished with a dismal 2–8 record, the versatile star was awarded the Heisman Trophy. No other individual on a defeated squad has ever earned this distinction.

Known as "the Golden Boy" for his blond hair and 6-foot-2-inch physique, Hornung was the ultimate utility player. At Notre Dame, he functioned as a quarterback, running back, punter, and safety. His 1956 season was a statistical marvel of individual brilliance amidst team struggle, as he led his team in passing, rushing, scoring, and returns.

When he joined the Green Bay Packers as the number one overall pick in the 1957 NFL draft, he became the centerpiece of Vince Lombardi’s legendary offense. Under Lombardi, Hornung transitioned to halfback to execute the "power sweep," a devastating play where pulling guards formed a convoy for him. This era established Green Bay as "Titletown," with Hornung leading the NFL in scoring from 1959 to 1961.

His 1960 season was particularly historic; he amassed 176 points—a single-season scoring record that stood for over 40 years until 2006. However, his career was not without controversy. A suspension in 1963 for gambling on games delayed his legendary status, and he had to wait until 1986 to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Beyond the field, Hornung embodied a bygone era of American sports: a glamorous, fun-loving, and hard-drinking figure. While he achieved immense success, including four NFL titles and an NFL MVP award in 1961, his legacy remains a complex mix of unparalleled athletic versatility and the colorful, often turbulent, lifestyle of a mid-century icon.
