In short: Paul Went was a rare talent capable of evolving alongside the game. From breaking records as a teenager to playing through a dislocated shoulder, his career was defined by resilience and a versatility that saw him move from the backline to the striker position.

Born in Bromley-by-Bow on 12 October 1949, Paul Went emerged as a significant talent in English football. His professional journey began at Leyton Orient, where he made history in 1966 by becoming the club's youngest ever player. During this early period, he played 50 games for the club before moving to Charlton in June 1967, where he would spend five years. Before turning professional, he represented both England schoolboys and the Under 18 youth side. His early success helped him secure a move to Charlton after his initial breakthrough.

His career was marked by significant transitions. After a stint at Fulham in the summer of 1972, he moved to Portsmouth, where he was voted 'Player of the Year' during his first season. However, a knee injury sustained in only his 11th game for the club prevented him from playing professionally again at that time. He joined the Fratton Park club as part of an ambitious rebuilding programme led by chairman John Deacon. This period was intended to establish a formidable central defensive partnership.

Went's resilience was evident during his time at Cardiff City, where he continued to play in a relegation decider despite a dislocated shoulder. In 1977, he moved into a striker role for the side, scoring a late goal against Tottenham at White Hart Lane. He eventually returned to his first club as his playing career drew to a close, later serving as assistant manager and manager at Brisbane Road. His time in Wales was marked by intense competition for places, including a battle with Mike England. He also demonstrated his adaptability by playing in various positions for the Bluebirds.

Went passed away on 4 January 2017 due to a stroke, leaving behind a legacy of professional versatility that saw him bridge the gap between the roles of centre-half and central defender. His tenure at Brisbane Road included a brief stint as the club's full manager. This final chapter of his career lasted for approximately three weeks.
