The Ecuadorian trailblazer making history at the San Siro
In short: From the youth academies of Esmeraldas to the pinnacle of European football, Pervis Estupiñán’s ascent is a masterclass in persistence. Now a historic signing for AC Milan, the left-back has navigated a complex web of loans and transfers to become a true continental standout.
Pervis Estựpiñán’s professional journey began in Ecuador, where he joined the LDU Quito youth system at just 13 years old in 2011. By the 2015 season, he had been promoted to the senior squad, making his professional debut on 1 February 2015, in a victory against El Nacional. His talent quickly attracted international attention, leading to a transfer to Watford in July 2016, which initiated a period of frequent movement across the Spanish leagues.
Between 2016 and 2020, Estupiñán moved through several Spanish clubs on loan, including Granada CF, UD Almería, RCD Mallorca, and CA Osasuna. His breakthrough on the grandest stage came with Villarreal, whom he joined in September 2020 for £14.9 million. During his tenure in Valencia, he achieved significant silverware, winning the 2020–21 UEFA Europa League and helping his side reach the penultimate stage of the 2021–22 UEFA Champions League.
After a successful stint with Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League, where he became known for his playmaking and crucial goals, Estupiñán achieved a historic milestone. In July 2025, he signed a five-year deal with AC Milan for a fee reported to be at least £17 million, becoming the first Ecuadorian player to ever represent the legendary Italian club. He continued his impact in Serie A, scoring his first goal for the Rossoneri in the Derby della Madonnina against Inter in March 2026.
