The €121 million transition from a family business to a global media giant
In short: In 1994, a small operation in the Austrian Tyrol began by marketing software. Today, it is Plaion, a sprawling media powerhouse that manages major game labels and film distribution. Its journey from a private venture to a subsidiary of a Swedish giant reveals the mechanics of modern media consolidation.
Franz Koch and Klemens Kundratitz established the firm in 1994, initially trading under the name Koch Media. It began by distributing software, selling over 250,000 licenses in 1995 before pivoting to video games in 1996. The company expanded rapidly, establishing regional hubs in Switzerland (1998), Italy (2000), and England, while diversifying into film distribution in 2003 through Koch Home Entertainment.
The company's trajectory shifted significantly in 2018 when the Swedish holding company THQ Nordic AB (now Embracer Group) acquired Koch Media Holding for €121 million. This deal was unique: Franz Koch, who owned 90% of the company, chose to sell his shares to the group for the benefit of the company rather than himself, as his family had no interest in taking over the business. This move effectively transitioned the firm from a founder-led entity to a corporate subsidiary.
Since the acquisition, the company has undergone aggressive expansion and rebranding. The entity bought Milestone for €44.9 million and Warhorse Studios for €42.8 million during 2019, before entering a €50 million co-publishing agreement with Starbreeze Studios in 2021. In August 2022, the company rebranded as Plaion, eventually moving to consolidate its various labels—including Deep Silver, Ravenscourt, and Prime Matter—under the single Plaion brand.
Today, Plaion maintains a dual presence in the Austrian municipality of Höfen, which has a population of roughly 1,200, and a branch in Planegg, Germany. While it operates on a massive scale, its headquarters remains rooted in a small village where it occupies an office complex and a 7,000 square metre plot owned by its parent company.
