The publisher that resurrected a brand by avoiding its recent history
In short: How does a company own the legacy of a fallen giant without inheriting its failures? THQ Nordic mastered a delicate branding maneuver, acquiring a famous trademark to capture its prestige while intentionally distancing itself from the corporate turmoil that led to the original company's collapse.
Founded in 2011 as Nordic Games GmbH, the Austrian publisher built its foundation on the remains of bankrupt entities. In June 2011, it acquired assets from the bankrupt JoWooD, including brands and products. This pattern of 'rescue' acquisitions continued rapidly: they bought the remaining properties of the American publisher THQ for US$4.9 million in April 2013, securing over 150 games like Darksiders and Red Faction. By 2016, they had also absorbed the intellectual property of Digital Reality and the assets of NovaLogic.
The most strategic move occurred in August 2016. The parent company had acquired the 'THQ' trademark in June 2014, but the subsidiary chose to rename itself THQ Nordic rather than simply 'THQ.' According to company leadership, this was a deliberate choice to capitalize on the brand's historical reputation while avoiding any association with the 'troubled history' of the original company's final years. It is a masterclass in brand rehabilitation: using the name's cultural capital while creating a firewall against its past scandals.
Today, THQ Nordic operates as a massive portfolio manager under the Embracer Group. Its reach spans from licensed titles like Disney and Nickelodeon to deep-catalog acquisitions like the Desperados and Gothic franchises. While the company has faced its own controversies—including a 2019 PR disaster involving an AMA on the extremist imageboard 8chan—it remains a primary vehicle for reviving legacy IP through remasters, new entries like Darksiders III, and dedicated development studios like Alkimia Interactive.
