How the Nazi regime attempted to rewrite Jesus as an Aryan warrior
In short: To secure power in a deeply Christian nation, the Nazi Party introduced 'Positive Christianity.' This was not a new faith, but a tactical rebranding designed to strip Christianity of its Jewish roots and replace the cross with the swastika.
Positive Christianity was a religious movement within Nazi Germany that sought to merge Nazi racial ideology with elements of Nicene Christianity. While Adolf Hitler publicly identified as a Christian to appeal to the German majority, historians like Ian Kershaw and Laurence Rees argue his religious stance was driven by political opportunism. He recognized that Germany's established churches held significant political weight, and he needed to avoid alienating them while pursuing his radical agenda.
The movement's theological core was a radical departure from tradition. Rather than focusing on the suffering and sacrifice of Jesus, 'positive' adherents emphasized his role as an active, heroic fighter. Ideologists like Alfred Rosenberg sought to distance the faith from its Jewish origins, even attempting to redefine Jesus as a 'Nordic Amorite' and a warrior against the Pharisees and Sadducees. This involved purging the Bible of 'Jewish impurities,' including the Old Testament and any New Testament passages that did not portray Jews negatively.
The regime's attempts to impose this ideology faced significant resistance. The effort to create a state-controlled Evangelical Church largely failed, leading to the formation of the dissident Confessing Church. Meanwhile, the Catholic Church issued the 1937 papal encyclical Mit brennender Sorge, denouncing the movement for its idolatry of race and state. Ultimately, the movement served as a transitional tool; as the regime's power grew, radicals like Rosenberg and Robert Ley pushed toward a neo-pagan 'German Faith Movement' that rejected Judeo-Christianity entirely.
