The Praetorian Guard: From Elite Imperial Bodyguards to Kingmakers of the Roman Empire
In short: Originally established to protect Roman generals, the Praetorian Guard evolved into a volatile political force. These elite soldiers eventually gained the power to assassinate emperors, auction off the imperial throne, and dictate the succession of Rome, until their final dissolution by Constantine the Great in the early 4th century.
The Praetorian Guard began as a modest security detail for Republican generals, with the first historical records dating to the Scipio family around 275 BC. When Augustus transitioned Rome from a republic to an empire in 27 BC, he formalized the unit as his personal bodyguard. By stationing these troops within the pomerium—the sacred boundary of Rome—Augustus granted them unique privileges, including the right to bear arms in the city center, a distinction no other military unit held.
As the centuries passed, the Guard’s role shifted from protection to political manipulation. Because they were the only armed force permanently garrisoned in the capital, they became the ultimate arbiters of imperial power. They frequently demanded massive financial bonuses, known as donativum, to ensure their loyalty. When emperors failed to pay or fell out of favor, the Guard did not hesitate to intervene. In AD 41, they assassinated Caligula and installed Claudius; in AD 193, they famously auctioned the imperial throne to the highest bidder, Didius Julianus, after murdering his predecessor, Pertinax.
The Guard’s influence was not absolute, however. Emperors like Septimius Severus recognized the danger of a politicized military and, after seizing power in 193, disbanded the existing Guard entirely, replacing them with his own loyal Pannonian legions. By the time of Diocletian in 284, the unit had lost its central role in palace life as the emperor moved his base to Nicomedia. The end finally arrived in 312, when Constantine the Great defeated the usurper Maxentius, who had been proclaimed emperor by the Guard. Constantine permanently dissolved the unit and dismantled their barracks, the Castra Praetoria, effectively ending their centuries-long reign of intrigue.
