From cleaning floors in Chennai to acclaimed leading man in international film festivals
In short: Before becoming a staple of Tamil cinema, Ramalakshmanan Muthuchamy worked as a cleaner to fund his acting dreams. After years of uncredited roles and comedic sidekick turns, he has finally transitioned from a beloved comedian to a critically acclaimed dramatic protagonist on the world stage.
Born Ramalakshmanan Muthuchamy on 27 August 1977, the actor known professionally as Soori followed a long, arduous path to stardom. In 1996, he moved from Madurai to Chennai with the specific goal of entering the Tamil film industry. His early years were marked by struggle; unable to secure immediate roles, he worked as a cleaner to finance his ambitions.
Soori's early career involved several uncredited appearances as a junior artiste, including work in films like Winner (2003) and Deepavali. His major breakthrough arrived in 2009 with the film Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu. A specific comedy scene in which his character consumes 50 parottas earned him the enduring moniker 'Parotta Soori'.
For over a decade, Soori was primarily recognized for his comedic performances and supporting roles in films such as Poraali (2011) and Jilla (2014). He even faced professional criticism in 2018 for his comedic work in Seema Raja and Saamy Square, a situation he addressed personally.
A significant career pivot occurred in 2023 when he was cast against type as the protagonist in Vetrimaaran's period crime thriller, Viduthalai Part 1. This dramatic turn received widespread critical and audience acclaim, paving the way for a string of leading roles in 2024, including Kottukkaali and Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai. Both Kottukkali and Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai were showcased at prominent locations, specifically the 53rd International Film Festival Rotterdam and the 74th Berlin International Film Festival.
