In short: From a Quaker's colonial acquisition to a modern-day hub for global corporations, the history of Purchase, New York, is a study in transformation. Once a tract of land defined by the width of a single day's ride, it has evolved into a prestigious center for both elite education and massive industry.

The origins of Purchase trace back to 1695, when John Harrison, a Quaker from Queens, acquired a strip of land approximately nine miles long and three miles wide from local Indigenous people. The agreement was specific: the Indigenous owners retained the right to use suitable whitewood trees for canoe construction. This territory, known as 'Harrison's Purchase,' eventually became the hamlet of Purchase, a name that persists today.

The landscape has undergone radical shifts from its colonial and agricultural roots. The grounds currently occupied by the State University of New York (SUNY) at Purchase once served as Strathglass Farms, a dairy operation. The area also hosted the Blind Brook Polo Club on the site where PepsiCo's headquarters now stands—a location that even saw Amelia Earhart land her plane. In the late 1880s, the area saw the rise of grand estates, such as the Old Oaks Country Club, built by silk merchant Trenor Luther Park.

Today, Purchase is a high-wealth nexus where academia and global commerce collide. It serves as a headquarters for major entities like Mastercard and PepsiCo, while also hosting a unique educational ecosystem. SUNY Purchase stands out as a top-10 public liberal arts college, notable for being the only institution in Westchester County to integrate professional conservatory training in the arts with a full sciences curriculum on a single 500-acre campus. This academic environment supports over 3,400 students with a 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio.
