In short: A single mishap in a chemical refinery transformed Zebediah Killgrave from an international spy into the Purple Man. Armed with pheromones that allow him to command the very will of others, this Marvel villain remains one of the most psychologically terrifying adversaries in comic book history.

Originally appearing in Marvel's Daredevil #4 in November 1964, the character was brought to life by writer Stan Lee and artist Joe Orlando. Born in Rijeka, Croatia, the man known as Zebedia/Zebediah Killgrave was a physician turned spy. His transformation occurred when he was accidentally doused with chemicals during an attempt to infiltrate a refinery. This exposure turned his skin and hair a distinct purple and granted him the ability to produce pheromones that facilitate verbal suggestion and mind control.

The mechanics of his power are as insidious as they are physical. His pheromones can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin, allowing him to manipulate the actions of those around him as long as he is present. While many succumb to his influence, certain individuals possess the mental fortitude or sensory limitations to resist. Doctor Doom’s immense willpower and Kingpin's strength have proven effective, as has Daredevil’s blindness, which limits the sensory input required for the pheromones to take hold. Conversely, characters like Moon Knight have defeated him simply by using earplugs to block his verbal commands.

Killgrave's history is defined by profound psychological trauma, most notably his role as the archenemy of Jessica Jones. In various iterations, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe portrayal by David Tennant, he has used his powers to psychologically torture Jones for months. His criminal career has spanned from building enterprises in San Francisco to attempting to enslave entire cities via water systems. Whether acting as a mastermind for the X-Men's Nate Grey or being manipulated by Baron Zemo, the Purple Man remains a persistent, terrifying force of absolute control.
