The legendary striker who conquered Europe and redefined the role of 'El Capitán'
In short: From a 17-year-old prodigy replacing a legend at Real Madrid to a global icon, Raúl González's career was a masterclass in longevity. He didn't just score goals; he broke records across three continents and became the definitive face of Spanish football excellence.
Raúl González Blanco's ascent was marked by a symbolic 'passing of the crown' during the 1994–95 season. At just 17 years and 124 days old, he became the youngest player to debut for Real Madrid's senior side, quickly establishing himself as a prolific force. His tenure at the club spanned 16 years, during which he became their all-time appearance leader with 741 matches and scored 323 goals, surpassing the legendary Alfredo Di Stéfano's record of 307.
His dominance in the UEFA Champions League was unparalleled. Raúl was the first player to reach 50 goals in the competition and the first to score in two different finals since the tournament's rebranding. He held the title of the all-time Spanish top goalscorer in the competition with 71 goals, and was named the UEFA Club Forward of the Year for three consecutive seasons between 1999 and 2002. His clinical nature extended to the international stage, where he earned 102 caps for Spain, scoring 44 goals.
Beyond Madrid, Raúl's influence was global. He found success in the Bundesliga with Schalke 04, winning the DFB-Pokal and DFL-Supercup, and later led Al Sadd to a Qatar Stars League title. Even in the twilight of his career with the New York Cosmos, he secured the North American Supporters' Trophy and the Soccer Bowl. Throughout a professional career spanning decades and continents, he maintained a remarkable discipline, notably never receiving a red card during his 17 years at the professional level.
