The youngest to reach the world's ultimate chess final
In short: At just 18 years old, R Praggnanandhaa shattered records by becoming the youngest player in history to reach a Chess World Cup final. His meteoric rise from a Chennai prodigy to a global powerhouse has redefined the speed at which modern chess mastery is achieved.
Born in Chennai in 2005, Praggnanandhaa's ascent began with a series of historic milestones. At just 10 years, 10 months, and 19 days old, he reached the status of international master in 2016, a record for the youngest person to do so. By 2018, he secured his third grandmaster norm in Italy, becoming the seventh-youngest person to ever earn the title, achieving it at 12 years, 10 months, and 13 days.
His trajectory into the elite tier of the sport was marked by rapid rating gains and high-profile victories. In December 2019, at age 14, he became the second-youngest player to reach a 2600 rating. He soon began facing the world's best, notably securing wins against world champion Magnus Carlsen in various formats, including a notable victory in a classical over-the-board match during Norway Chess 2024.
The pinnacle of his early career arrived in 2023, when he defeated Fabiano Caruana in the semi-finals of the Chess World Cup to reach the final. This feat made him the second Indian, following Viswanathan Anand, to reach a World Cup final. He has since solidified his status as a premier talent, winning the 2025 FIDE Circuit and claiming his first Grand Chess Tour title in 2026 after a dominant 19–9 victory over Vincent Keymer.
Beyond individual accolades, Praggnanandhaa has been a cornerstone of Indian team success, contributing to silver and bronze medals at the Asian Games and multiple Chess Olympiads. His rapid rise has earned him significant national recognition, including the 2022 Arjuna Award and being named the 2023 Indian of the Year in Sports by CNN-News18.
