Richard Copeland Slocum's tenure at Texas A&M, spanning from 1989 to 2002, was defined by a commitment to ethical standards. Inheriting a program struggling under severe NCAA sanctions, Slocum famously rejected the notion that winning required cheating. His philosophy was to win the right way, a gamble that resulted in a remarkable 123–47–2 record over 14 seasons.
The cornerstone of this success was the 'Wrecking Crew' defense. This unit was statistically dominant, leading the Southwest Conference (SWC) in four categories between 1991 and 1993, and ranking first in the nation for total defense in 1991. This defensive prowess helped transform Kyle Field into one of the most intimidating venues in college football. During Slocum's tenure, the Aggies lost only 12 home games, and for much of the 1990s, the team held the longest active home winning streak in the country.
Slocum's impact extended to professional ranks, with over 50 of his players being drafted into the NFL. His achievements earned him induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2012. Beyond his coaching success, he has remained a vital figure at Texas A&M, serving in various leadership roles, including two terms as interim athletic director in 2019 and 2024.
His legacy is marked by unprecedented consistency; he never had a losing season during his 14 years as head coach and achieved the highest winning percentage in SWC history, surpassing even the legendary Darrell Royal.
