The session musician who became a cornerstone of modern rock
In short: Rami Jaffee's career is a masterclass in the power of the sideman. From a chance meeting at a deli to joining a multi-platinum rock staple, his journey illustrates how a versatile keyboardist can shape the sound of multiple eras while maintaining a distinct artistic identity.
Rami Jaffee's entry into the music industry was defined by a serendipitous encounter in 1989. While waiting in line at Canter's Deli in Los Angeles, he heard that Jakob Dylan and Tobi Miller were seeking an organist for their group, the Apples. After hearing a few demo tapes in a car stereo, Jaffee joined immediately. The group soon rebranded as The Wallflowers and signed with Virgin Records, releasing their self-titled debut in 1992.
Jaffee's career is marked by a unique duality: he is both a foundational member of a long-standing band and a prolific session musician. During the mid-1990s, while The Wallflowers were navigating label shifts and commercial success—including the quadruple Platinum success of 'Bringing Down the Horse' in 1996—Jaffee was simultaneously providing keyboards for artists like Rickie Lee Jones and Leah Andreone. This versatility allowed him to maintain a steady presence in the industry even when his primary band faced contractual hurdles or hiatuses.
His relationship with the Foo Fighters serves as a notable example of his professional evolution. He first collaborated with them on the 'Godzilla' soundtrack in 1998, contributing to the track 'A320.' This eventually led to a touring and session role in 2005, and he was formally inducted as a full-time member in 2016. Throughout these transitions, Jaffee has balanced high-profile roles—such as performing with the Sound City Players supergroup alongside Paul McCartney and Stevie Nicks—with his own ventures, including co-owning Fonogenic Studios in the San Fernando Valley.
