A historic breakthrough for Mexican tennis on the world stage
In short: Renata Zarazúa didn't just break into the top 100; she dismantled decades of statistical drought. By defeating a top-10 seed at a Grand Slam, she became the first Mexican woman to achieve such a feat since 1995, signaling a paradigm shift for her nation's tennis legacy.
Born in Mexico City in 1997, Renata Zarazúa has spent years navigating the grueling path of professional tennis. Her ascent is marked by several 'firsts' for Mexican women. In 2020, she qualified for the French Open main draw, ending a 20-year absence for her country at a major. That same year, she reached the semifinals of the Mexican Open, becoming the first Mexican woman to do so since 1993.
Zarazúa's career is defined by steady progression across various tiers of competition. She has secured three singles titles on the WTA Challenger Tour and won her first such title in 2023 at the Montevideo Open. Her doubles success is equally notable, where she reached a peak ranking of No. 72 in September 2025, making her the first Mexican woman to break into the top 100 in both singles and doubles categories.
The pinnacle of her recent achievements occurred at the US Open in 2025. By overcoming world No. 6 Madison Keys, she secured a victory over a top-10 opponent at a major—a milestone no Mexican woman had reached since Angélica Gavaldón's win against Jana Novotná in 1995. While her record against top-10 players remains challenging at 1–6, these results cement her status as a pioneer for the next generation of Mexican athletes.
Her journey is rooted in a lineage of tennis; she is the great-niece of Vicente Zarazúa, who won exhibition gold at the 1968 Olympics. Today, she carries that legacy forward, balancing high-pressure tournament play with a consistent presence on the ITF and WTA circuits.
