How a calm midfielder became the 'conductor' of the Swiss national team
In short: From the Swiss Challenge League to the heights of European football, Remo Freuler has built a career defined by composure. Known as the 'Iceman' for his steady presence on the ball, the versatile midfielder has transitioned from a young talent in Winterthur to a vital component of the Swiss national squad.
Remo Freuler's professional journey began in the Swiss lower leagues. After developing through the youth systems of FC Hinwil and FC Winterthur, he made his professional debut for Winterthur in 2010 at age 18. His early career was marked by a move to Grasshopper Club Zürich, though he found more consistency during a loan spell back at Winterthur, where he helped the club secure a fourth-place finish in the Challenge League.
A significant turning point arrived in January 2016, when Freuler transferred to Italian side Atalanta B.C. for a fee of €2 million. It was during his time in Serie A that he earned the nickname 'Iceman,' a moniker bestowed by an Italian journalist because of his remarkable composure while in possession. Under manager Gian Piero Gasperini, Freuler became a central figure in a side that improved nine places in the league standings during the 2016–17 season, qualifying for the Europa League group stages for the first time since 1990.
On the international stage, Freuler has become a cornerstone of the Swiss national team. Since his debut in 2017, he has represented his country in multiple major tournaments, including the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups and various UEFA European Championships. His tactical intelligence has led observers to describe him as a 'conductor of the orchestra,' noting his ability to recover the ball, tackle effectively, and utilize a wide passing range to control the tempo of the game.
