Why the white tiger's ancestral home is now a hub for solar energy
In short: Nestled between the Vindhya and Kaimur ranges in Madhya Pradesh, Rewa is a city defined by its dramatic geography and royal legacy. Once famous as the summer retreat for maharajas and the original home of the white tiger, this historic region is rapidly evolving into a modern industrial and energy powerhouse.
Rewa sits on a plateau in north-eastern Madhya Pradesh, defined by the Bihad and Bichhiya rivers and surrounded by the rugged Kaimur hills. Historically, the city served as a princely seat, with the Rewa Fort remaining the central hub where the royal family still resides. Nearby, the Govindgarh Palace once functioned as the summer capital for the Maharaja of Rewa, famously housing Mohan, the first white tiger discovered in India. This legacy of wildlife conservation continues today at the Mukundpur White Tiger Safari and Zoo.
The region's landscape is as ecologically significant as it is historically rich. The surrounding hills host some of India's most impressive waterfalls, including the Bahuti Waterfall, which plunges 198 meters and is recognized as the highest in Madhya Pradesh. This natural terrain, characterized by a significant limestone belt, has long supported industrial activity, with major cement plants operating in the area. The local economy has diversified further through the Chorhata Industrial Area, which serves as a base for telecommunications and manufacturing.
In recent years, Rewa has pivoted toward large-scale infrastructure and sustainability. The commissioning of the 750MW Rewa Ultra Mega Solar plant in July 2018 marked a major milestone, establishing the district as a key player in India's renewable energy sector. This modernization effort extends to urban waste management, with new projects aiming to convert municipal refuse into electricity. With the recent inauguration of the Rewa Airport in October 2024 and its established rail connectivity, the city is bridging its ancient royal past with a future focused on industrial growth and green energy.
