The Detroit Tigers' powerhouse outfielder rewriting the franchise record books
In short: From a fifth overall draft pick to a historic offensive force, Riley Greene is redefining Tigers baseball. He has achieved feats not seen in the organization since legends like Miguel Cabrera and Al Kaline, blending immense power with a relentless, high-impact presence at the plate.
Since his MLB debut in 202 2, Riley Greene has transitioned from a highly touted prospect to a cornerstone of the Detroit Tigers. After being selected fifth overall in the 2019 MLB draft and signing for a $6.18 million bonus, Greene's path was not without obstacles. He missed the 2020 season due to the pandemic and faced significant injury setbacks, including a broken right foot in 2022 and Tommy John surgery in late 2023 to repair his non-throwing elbow.
Despite these hurdles, Greene's statistical milestones are historic. In 2025, he became the first player in MLB history to hit two home runs in a single ninth inning. That same season, he achieved a rare power-production feat, reaching 35 home runs and 110 RBIs—the first Tiger to do so since Miguel Cabrera in 2013. His immense power was evident when he launched a 471-foot grand slam in Sacramento, marking the Tigers' longest home run since Statcast began.
His consistency is reflected in his All-Star pedigree. Greene has been selected to three consecutive All-Star teams, becoming the first Tigers outfielder to achieve this since Al Kaline. While his 2025 season saw him join an exclusive group of players striking out over 200 times, his ability to drive in runs is unparalleled for his age; he became the first Tiger to reach 200 career RBIs before age 25 since Travis Fryman in 1992. By 2026, he secured a $5 million contract, cementing his role as a vital leader for the franchise.
