How a 2014 merger transformed the landscape of Latvian football
In short: Riga FC did not emerge from thin air. Born from a strategic merger of two local sides, the club rapidly ascended through the Latvian leagues to challenge the established order, eventually securing multiple top-tier titles under Ukrainian leadership.
The origins of Riga FC are rooted in a complex administrative transition. Formed by merging two Riga teams, FC Caramba and Dinamo Rīga, the club was formally registered during April 2014. During the 2015 season, the team competed in the Latvian First League under the transitional name 'Riga Dinamo Football Club,' utilizing the license held by FC Caramba. This lineage is distinct from a previous club named Dinamo Riga, which competed in 1940 and between 1945 and 1960.
The club's rise was marked by rapid success and strategic acquisitions. The club rebranded as Riga FC following their 2015 First League title and subsequent promotion to the Higher League. In 2017, they expanded their infrastructure by acquiring the Šitiks Football Academy, which had been founded in 1999 by Genādijs Šitiks. This acquisition allowed the club to operate its own youth system, known as the Riga FC Academy.
On the pitch, the club reached a significant milestone in 2018 when Viktor Skrypnyk was appointed as coach. Under his management, Riga FC secured two Latvian Higher League titles in 2018 and 2019, alongside a Latvian Football Cup victory in 2018. Despite this sporting success, the club faced external scrutiny in 2020, when reports surfaced regarding owner Sergey Lomakin being placed on Latvia's persona non grata list—a claim the club's board denied.
A mainstay in the Virslīga since 2016, Riga FC currently competes in Latvia's top football division.
