From small-town standout to the NFL's newest rising quarterback
In short: Riley Leonard's journey from Fairhope High School to the National Championship stage is a testament to rapid ascent. After a transformative season at Notre Dame, the former Duke standout has transitioned to the professional ranks, proving his ability to perform under the intense pressure of the NFL.
Born in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and raised in Fairhope, Alabama, Leonard's athletic versatility was evident early on. At Fairhope High School, he was a dual-sport athlete, playing both football and basketball. During his senior football season, he demonstrated significant offensive production, recording 1,900 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and 500 rushing yards.
Leonard's collegiate career was marked by a strategic move. After appearing in seven games as a true freshman at Duke University in 2021, he entered the transfer portal in late 2023. He joined Notre Dame for the 2024 season, leading the Fighting Irish to a historic 14–2 record. This campaign included seven victories over ranked opponents—the most in school history—and a berth in the College Football Playoff. The season culminated in a National Championship Game appearance, where Notre Dame finished as the national runner-up after a 34–23 loss to Ohio State.
His success in college paved the way for his entry into the NFL. After being taken by the Indianapolis Colts during the 2025 NFL draft's sixth round, Leonard rapidly ascended the team's depth chart. Following injuries to starter Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones, Leonard saw significant action, including a standout performance against the Houston Texans where he threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns. His rapid rise from a third-string prospect to a key contributor highlights the high-stakes evolution of modern collegiate and professional football careers.
