From a bra factory to anime stardom: the rise of voice actress Rie Takahashi
In short: Born in Saitama Prefecture, Rie Takahashi transformed a high school fascination with voice acting into a prolific career. After working part-time in a supermarket and a bra factory, she rose to prominence as a leading voice in major anime series, eventually winning prestigious industry awards for her versatile vocal performances.
Rie Takahashi, born on February 27, 1994, first became interested in voice acting during high school after noticing that some actresses voiced male characters. Her journey began in earnest when she joined her school's broadcasting club and won a special citation at the 4th High School Animation Fair. Following her graduation from Koshigaya-Minami High School, she enrolled in 81 Actor's Studio, the training school for the agency 81 Produce. During this period, she balanced her studies with part-time work, including roles at a supermarket and a bra factory, before officially joining 81 Produce in 2013.
Her professional breakthrough arrived in 2015 with a leading role in the anime series Seiyu's Life!. That same year, she co-founded the musical unit Earphones alongside Marika Kouno and Yuki Nagaku. Her career trajectory accelerated in 2016 when she received the Best Female Newcomer award at the 10th Seiyu Awards. Throughout her career, she has voiced iconic characters such as Megumin in KonoSuba, Emilia in Re:Zero, and Mash Kyrielight in Fate/Grand Order, often contributing to series soundtracks as both a solo artist and a member of various musical groups.
Beyond her work in animation, Takahashi launched a solo singing career in 2021 under the A-Sketch/Astro Voice label, releasing her debut album, Tōmei na Fusen, in June of that year. Her industry recognition continued with a Best Supporting Actress award at the 16th Seiyu Awards. Despite her success, the physical demands of her profession remain a reality; in April 2025, her agency, 81 Produce, announced she would take a one-month hiatus to undergo surgery for a vocal cord nodule, highlighting the intense vocal strain often associated with the voice acting industry.
