The Canadian prodigy who swept every major high school award since LeBron James
In short: Before he was a star for the Toronto Raptors, RJ Barrett was a phenomenon. From playing with a mini-hoop in France to dominating the American prep circuit, his ascent was marked by unprecedented accolades and a relentless drive to reach the NBA All-Star stage.
Born in Toronto in 2000, Rowan Alexander 'RJ' Barrett Jr. followed a path shaped by his father's professional basketball career. His early years included living in various countries, including France, where he began playing organized basketball for JDA Dijon Basket during the 2005–06 season. By age 12, a period of personal struggle in a game led him to pivot from football to a singular focus on basketball, a decision that would eventually see him training with his godfather, NBA legend Steve Nash.
Barrett's high school career was nothing short of historic. After starting at St. Marcellinus in Ontario, he transferred to Montverde Academy in Florida to elevate his game. As the premier prospect of 2018, he achieved a national title and collected every significant high school honour, a feat not seen since LeBron James. His trophy case grew to include the Naismith Prep Player of the Year, Gatorade National Player of the Year, and the Morgan Wooten National Player of the Year.
His transition to the professional ranks was equally impactful. The New York Knicks took him third in the 2019 NBA draft following a remarkable debut year at Duke, during which he set a new school record for points by a freshman. Throughout his career, Barrett has joined an elite group of players—including Kobe Bryant and LeBron James—by reaching specific statistical milestones, such as 2,000 points, 500 rebounds, and 300 assists before the age of 21. In late 2023, a major trade brought the 'Maple Mamba' back to his hometown team, the Toronto Raptors.
