In short: Before he was a cornerstone of the D-Generation X era, Brian James was a United States Marine. His journey from a decorated soldier to a multi-time champion and Hall of Fame wrestler is a remarkable tale of reinvention, spanning decades of professional wrestling history.

Born Brian Armstrong on May 20, 1969, the man known to millions as Road Dogg began his professional wrestling career on December 1, 1986, defeating Kevin Sullivan. However, his trajectory was interrupted by service; after his debut, James enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1987. His military background even surfaced during his wrestling career, as WCW commentators mentioned his service in Operation Desert Storm during a 1991 pay-per-view.

James's career is defined by various personas and eras. In the mid-1990s, he performed as 'The Roadie' in the WWF, acting as an assistant to Jeff Jarrett. He later achieved massive fame as 'Road Dogg' Jesse James, particularly as one half of the New Age Outlar, alongside Billy Gunn. Together, they captured the WWF Tag Team Championship five times and became integral members of the D-Generation X stable. His accolades also include a single Intercontinental Championship and a Hardcore Championship.

The later years of his career saw him navigate the shifting landscapes of the industry. In TNA Wrestling, performing as B.G. James, he found success in the 3 Live Kru with Konnan and Ron Killings, winning the NWA World Tag Team Championship twice. Despite facing personal struggles and a period of suspension in 2001, his contributions were eventually recognized with an induction into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2019 as part of the D-Generation X class.
