In short: Most athletes find their niche early, but RJ Harvey had to reinvent himself entirely. After transitioning from a high school quarterback to a collegiate running back, he overcame a torn ACL to become a standout force at UCF and eventually a key playmaker for the Denver Broncos.

Born in Orlando, Florida, on February 4, 2001, Harvey’s football journey began at age five. During his time at Edgewater High School, he operated as a dual-threat quarterback, a role that saw him record 42 passing touchdowns and 1,815 yards in his senior year, alongside 1,350 rushing yards and 22 scores. His performance earned him a ranking as the 39th-best dual-threat quarterback nationally and a commitment to the University of Virginia. Despite facing a winless sophomore season, he eventually led his high school squad to a district title. He also maintained a strong 4.3 GPA throughout his studies.

After redshirting his freshman year in 2019, Harvey transferred to the University of Central Florida (UCF). The transition required a significant positional shift from quarterback to running back. His progress was interrupted in the 2021 preseason by a torn ACL, forcing him to miss the entire season. However, his resilience paid off in 2022 and 2023, when he became a dominant force in the American Athletic Conference. He initially spent his first collegiate year on the depth chart at Virginia. His comeback was marked by being named second-team All-American Athletic Conference in 2022.

In 2023, Harvey became the first UCF player since 2018 to surpass 1,000 rushing yards in a single season, ultimately totaling 1,416 yards and 16 touchdowns. This success propelled him into the 2025 NFL Draft, where the Denver Broncos selected him in the second round as the 60th overall pick. Since his debut, he has transitioned from a backup to a vital starter following injuries to teammates, proving his versatility as both a runner and a receiver. His breakout season included a massive 206-yard performance against Oklahoma State. Following his selection by Denver, he signed a four-year rookie contract in July 2025.
