From undrafted free agent to NFL defensive powerhouse
In short: Most players struggle to secure an NFL roster spot, let alone become a statistical leader. Follow the resilient journey of Robert Spillane, a versatile athlete who transitioned from an unheralded running back recruit into a professional defensive powerhouse, eventually signing a massive thirty-three million dollar contract with the New England Patriots.
Robert Spillane’s path to the NFL was anything but linear. Originally a highly versatile recruit at Fenwick High School, he entered the collegiate level as a 3-star athlete for the Western Michigan Broncos. While he was initially recruited to play running back, he eventually transitioned to linebacker, a move that would define his professional career. During his four seasons at Western Michigan, he appeared in 47 games, accumulating 312 tackles and earning second-team All-Mid American Conference honors in both his junior and senior years.
His professional ascent began as an undrafted free agent with the Tennessee Titans in May 2018. After navigating the volatility of practice squads and roster cuts, Spillane found a significant opportunity with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Following an injury to starter Devin Bush Jr. in October 2020, Spillane was named the team's starter. He quickly made his mark, notably recording a 33-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Baltimore Ravens and sacking rookie quarterback Joe Burrow later that same season.
Spillane's career has been marked by consistent statistical growth and high-level production. Following his time playing for the Las Vegas Raiders, during which he was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week in 2023, he joined the New England Patriots on a massive three-year, $33 million deal in March 2025. His ability to command the middle of the field is evidenced by his 2024 season, where his 158 total tackles tied for third in the entire NFL. Interestingly, football excellence runs in his family; he is the grandson of Johnny Lattner, the 1953 Heisman Trophy winner.
