How a family tragedy in New York sparked a professional coaching career
In short: For Robert Saleh, the drive to coach football wasn't just about the game. It was born from the survival of his brother, David, during the September 11 attacks. This personal spark eventually propelled Saleh to become the first Muslim head coach in NFL history.
Born in Dearborn, Michigan, to Lebanese immigrant parents, Robert Saleh’s path to the NFL was shaped by a profound family experience. In 2001, his brother David was on the 61st floor of the South Tower during the September 11 attacks. After witnessing the impact on the North Tower and navigating through the building, David managed to escape to safety from the 24th floor. Saleh has credited this traumatic event with providing the motivation to pursue his professional dreams in football coaching.
Saleh’s ascent through the coaching ranks began at the collegiate level in 2002, working with programs like Michigan State and the University of Georgia. He eventually moved to the NFL, starting as an intern with the Houston Texans in 2005. His career is marked by significant defensive successes, including a stint with the Seattle Seahawks' 'Legion of Boom' defense, which won Super Bowl XLVIII in 2013, and a highly ranked defensive unit for the San Francisco 49ers in 2019.
His leadership has also carried historical weight. Upon being hired by the New York Jets in 2021, Saleh became the first Muslim head coach in the history of the NFL. He is the fourth Arab-American head coach in the league, joining Ed Khayat, Abe Gibron, and Rich Kotite. After a tenure with the Jets that ended in October 2024, Saleh has continued his career with the 49ers and most recently joined the Tennessee Titans as head coach in early 2026.
