In short: Robert Smith was a rare force in football, a two-time Ohio Mr. Football and an NFL rushing leader. Yet, his legacy is defined as much by what he walked away from as what he achieved on the field, transitioning from professional sports to medicine and the study of the stars.

Before becoming a professional star, Smith demonstrated extraordinary versatility. At Euclid High School, he achieved the rare feat of winning Ohio's Mr. Football Award twice, in 1988 and 1989. His athleticism extended beyond the gridiron; he was a competitive track and field athlete, recording a personal best of 10.24 seconds in the 100 meters during his time at Ohio State. During his high school years, he averaged 31 yards on every punt return. He also recorded 1,564 yards on 177 rushes as a junior.

His professional career with the Minnesota Vikings was marked by both brilliance and physical struggle. After being selected 21st overall in the 1993 NFL draft, Smith battled various ailments, including injuries to his knees and ankles, as well as chicken pox. He reached his peak in 2000, when he led the NFC in rushing with 1,521 yards at age 28. During his eight-season NFL career, he amassed 6,818 rushing yards, a figure that stood as the second all-time record for the Vikings until it was surpassed by Adrian Peterson in 2012. The Minnesota Vikings selected him during the 1993 draft's first round. His career total included 1,292 receiving yards.

Despite his success, Smith's departure from the NFL was driven by a desire to pursue a career in medicine and to avoid further serious injury. His retirement in 2001 followed a third knee surgery. Beyond the stadium, Smith has explored diverse interests, including amateur astronomy—featured in the 2007 PBS program Seeing in the Dark—and has been open about his personal journey with sobriety since the birth of his son. He authored a book titled The Rest of the Iceberg. Additionally, he founded the Robert Smith Foundation to support cancer research.
