From undrafted free agent to NFL touchdown leader
In short: Most players struggle to make an NFL roster, let alone lead the league. Robert Tonyan’s journey from an undrafted college standout to a premier tight end is a masterclass in persistence, navigating injuries and multiple team changes to reach the summit of his position.
Robert Tonyan’s professional ascent began far from the spotlight. An undrafted free agent out of Indiana State, he first signed with the Detroit Lions in May 2017 on a three-year, $1.66 million contract. Though released before that season began, his tenacity led him to the Green Bay Packers' practice squad later that year, eventually paving the way for a significant career in the National Football League.
During his five seasons with the Packers from 2018 to 2022, Tonyan evolved into a formidable offensive weapon. Reaching a career high in 2020, he amassed 11 touchdowns, 586 yards and 52 catches, matching Travis Kelce's top ranking for tight ends. One of his most notable performances occurred on October 5, 2020, during a Monday Night Football game, where he caught six passes for 98 yards and three touchdowns to help defeat the Atlanta Falcons 30–16.
However, the path was not without significant setbacks. In October 2021, a torn ACL in his left knee forced him onto injured reserve, sidelining him for the remainder of that season. Since then, Tonyan has navigated the volatile landscape of professional football, moving through rosters including the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, and Kansas City Chiefs. By 2026, his journey came full circle as he signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, continuing a career defined by resilience through every roster change and injury.
