Was the last Roman emperor a child figurehead named after Rome's legendary founders?
In short: Romulus Augustulus, a minor placed on the throne by his father, ruled for only ten months before his deposition in 476. Though often cited as the final Western Roman emperor, his reign was so inconsequential that historians debate whether he or his predecessor truly held the title.
Romulus Augustulus was a shadowy figure, installed as a puppet emperor at age ten by his father, Orestes, on 31 October 475. His name carried a poetic irony: he bore the names of Romulus, the legendary founder of Rome, and Augustus, the first emperor. Yet, his reign was marked by total political impotence. He issued no known laws, left no significant inscriptions, and was never recognized by the Eastern Roman emperor Zeno, who continued to support the deposed Julius Nepos.
The collapse of his rule was swift. In 476, barbarian foederati under Odoacer demanded land in Italy. When Orestes refused, Odoacer defeated him at Ticinum on 28 August 476 and executed him. By 4 September, Odoacer captured Ravenna, deposed the young Romulus, and declared himself King of Italy. Rather than killing the boy, Odoacer spared him due to his youth and beauty, granting him a pension and a residence at the Castellum Lucullanum in Campania.
Whether Romulus was truly the 'last' emperor remains a point of historical contention. While 6th-century writers like Marcellinus Comes established the tradition of viewing his deposition as the end of the Western Roman Empire, modern scholars like Ralph W. Mathisen argue that Julius Nepos, who ruled in Dalmatia until 480, holds that distinction. Regardless, the transition from Romulus's reign is a common marker for the shift from antiquity to the medieval period, symbolizing the final erosion of Roman political authority in the West.
