In short: He was known as 'Das Phantom' for his uncanny ability to appear out of nowhere. From a record-breaking 10-second strike to a massive €18.75 million transfer, Roy Makaay's career was defined by clinical, sudden, and unstoppable precision.

Roy Makaay’s reputation as a clinical finisher was forged in the Spanish La Liga. After moving from Tenerife to Deportivo de La Coruña in 1999 for 10 million Pesetas, he immediately transformed the club. In his debut season, he netted 22 goals in 36 appearances, including a hat-trick on his league debut against Alavés. This prolific form helped secure Deportivo’s first La Liga title and established him as the club's all-time leading scorer.

His dominance extended across Europe. During the 2002–03 season, Makaay earned the European Golden Boot after scoring 29 goals. This performance caught the attention of Bayern Munich, who eventually beat competition from Chelsea and Manchester United to sign him in the summer of 2003 for a then-club record €18.75 million. At Bayern, he earned the nicknames 'Das Phantom' and 'Tormaschine' (goal machine) due to his ability to score from unexpected positions.

One of his most enduring legacies occurred on 7 March 2007, when he set the record for the quickest goal in Champions League history. Just 10.12 seconds into the match against Real Madrid, Makaay capitalized on a misplaced backpass by Roberto Carlos to tap the ball past Iker Casillas. Beyond his club exploits, Makaay was a mainstay for the Dutch national team between 1996 and 2005, representing his country at Euro 2000, Euro 2004, and the 2008 Olympics, where he served as captain.
