The Belgian club that holds the number one spot in history
In short: Founded in 1880 by British workers, Royal Antwerp FC is the oldest football club in Belgium. While many clubs struggle with identity, Antwerp has spent decades navigating relegation, intense city rivalries, and a historic partnership with Manchester United to reclaim its place among Europe's elite.
The club's origins lie in the Antwerp Football and Cricket Club, established by British expatriates 15 years before the Belgian Football Association was formed. While the club focused on cricket and athletics initially, it formalized its football division in 1887. This early start earned them a unique distinction: when matricule numbers were introduced in 1926, Antwerp was assigned number one.
Antwerp's history is marked by dramatic shifts in fortune. After a period of dominance, the club suffered a significant decline, spending several years in the lower divisions during the early 2000s. Following a relegation in 2004, the team endured a 13-year stint in the second tier before returning to the top flight in 2017. This resurgence eventually led to a domestic double in the 2022–23 season.
The club's modern era has been defined by a return to the highest levels of competition. After a 66-year drought, they secured their first national championship since 1957 on 4 June 2023. This success paved the way for their debut in the UEFA Champions League group stage during the 2023–24 season, where they famously secured a 3–2 victory over Barcelona at their home ground, the Bosuilstadion.
Beyond the pitch, Antwerp is known for its intense local rivalries, particularly with Beerschot A.C. This rivalry was ignited in 1900 when many players departed Antwerp for the new club. Today, the clubs represent different social demographics within the city, maintaining a fierce competitive tension that defines the local footballing culture.
