How a Japanese high school star became an NBA first-round pioneer
In short: Before he was a fixture in the NBA, Rui Hachimura was a baseball catcher in Toyama. His journey from leading Meisei High School to a historic first-round draft pick is a masterclass in international adaptation and elite scoring.
Born in February 1998, Hachimura’s path to the NBA was defined by rapid ascent and linguistic hurdles. After dominating the Japanese high school circuit—leading Meisei to three consecutive All-Japan High School Tournament titles—he moved to the United States to play for the Gonzaga Bulldogs. His transition was not without friction; in 2016, he faced questions regarding his eligibility as he worked to bridge a significant language gap, reporting at the time that while he understood 80 percent of English, he could only speak about 30 to 40 percent.
His collegiate career was historic. In 2017, he became the first Japanese national to compete in the NCAA Division I men's tournament. His talent was undeniable, earning him WCC Player of the Year honors and a spot as a Naismith Player of the Year finalist. This momentum carried into the 2019 NBA Draft, where he was selected ninth overall by the Washington Wizards. This achievement made him the first Japanese player ever selected in the first round of the NBA draft, following in the footsteps of Yasutaka Okayama, who went 171st in 1981.
Since entering the league, Hachimura has evolved from a promising rookie into a versatile rotation piece for major franchises like the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers. Beyond his scoring, his defensive utility was highlighted during the 2023 playoffs, where he was tasked with guarding NBA superstar Nikola Jokić. Whether hitting career-high 36-point games or setting a record for the highest three-point percentage in a single NBA playoff series at 51.8 percent, Hachimura remains a cornerstone of Japanese basketball on the world stage.
