From cricket bowler to world-leading javelin champion
In short: Rumesh Tharanga's journey began with cricket, bowling at speeds of 134 km/h. Today, he stands as a global force in athletics, having achieved a historic 92.62 m throw that placed him eighth on the world all-time list.
Born in Kalutara, Sri Lanka, on 21 March 2003, Tharanga's path to athletics was shaped by his father, a former discus and shot-put thrower. While he initially focused on cricket during his teenage years at St. Peter's College, Colombo, he eventually transitioned from discus to the javelin throw in 2017. Such a transition prompted a quick rise in global standings, supported by expert training from Mike and Kelsey Barber at Australia's Queensland Institute of Sport.
Tharanga's 2026 season stands as a remarkable period of dominance. He secured gold medals at the Asian Games in Nagoya and the Commonwealth Games, while also claiming titles at the World Ultimate Championship in Budapest and the Diamond League. His performance at the 2026 Golden Gala was particularly significant; his 92.62 m throw was the longest recorded anywhere in the world since the 2024 Olympics, marking a new personal best and a world-leading mark for that season.
His technical precision was evident in his victory at the 2026 Memorial Van Damme, where he secured the win on his third attempt with a throw of 89.04 m. By securing this win, he became the initial athlete from Sri Lanka to triumph in a Diamond League final. Beyond the field, his achievements have earned him significant recognition, including a promotion to the rank of Sergeant by the Sri Lanka Air Force in August 2026.
