From striker to Sporting CP's legendary goalkeeper and national icon
In short: Rui Patrício did not start his career in goal. Originally a striker, a chance encounter with a Sporting CP scout changed his trajectory forever. He went on to become a 100-cap international, a European Champion, and one of the most decorated goalkeepers in Portuguese football history.
Born in the village of Marrazes in 15 February 1988, Patrício’s professional journey began at the Sporting CP academy. Once a striker, he switched to goalkeeping after a scout noticed him, eventually making his Primeira Liga debut on 19 November 2006. During that encounter with Marítimo, he notably stopped a penalty only 15 minutes before the game ended.
His tenure at Sporting CP saw him become an undisputed starter by the 2007–08 season, following the departure of the club's regular keeper, Ricardo. During his twelve years with the club, he amassed 467 official appearances—the second-highest in Sporting's history, trailing only Hilário da Conceição. His dominance was recognized through multiple awards, including being named Sporting's Footballer of the Year for two consecutive years in 2011 and 2012.
On the international stage, Patrício became a cornerstone of the Portuguese national team. He earned his first cap in 2010 and reached the historic milestone of 100 caps on 12 October 2021, becoming the first Portuguese goalkeeper to do so. His career highlights include winning the 2016 UEFA European Championship and the 2019 UEFA Nations League. Following productive periods at Roma in Serie A and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League, including winning the first Europa Conference League, Patrício declared his retirement from professional football on 11 December 2025.
His career was not without intense challenges. In May 2018, Patrício and his teammates were injured during an attack by approximately 50 supporters at the Sporting training ground. This incident, combined with a collapsed transfer to Inter Milan, eventually led to his departure for England in 2018.
