The resilient rise and sudden retirement of rugby league star Ryan Papenhuyzen
In short: From his 2019 debut to a career defined by severe fractures and concussions, Ryan Papenhuyzen's journey with the Melbourne Storm was a masterclass in physical endurance. Despite facing shattered kneecaps and ankle breaks, the Clive Churchill Medalist continued to dominate before the cumulative toll of head knocks led to his retirement.
Ryan Papenhuyzen’s professional rugby league career was marked by extraordinary individual brilliance and a relentless cycle of injury. After debuting for the Melbourne Storm in 2019 at just 20 years old, he quickly established himself as a premier fullback. During an unforgettable 2020 campaign, he guided the Storm to NRL Grand Final glory and secured the Clive Churchill Medal as the game's standout player.
However, his physical dominance was frequently interrupted by significant trauma. In 2021, a severe concussion sustained during a match against St. George Illawarra sidelined him for much of the season. The following years brought even more grueling setbacks, including a suspected fractured kneecap in 2022 and a shattered kneecap that forced him to miss the first twenty-two rounds of the 2023 season. Even after returning to the field, a season-ending ankle fracture during the 202 3 finals sparked widespread speculation that his career had reached its end.
Despite these setbacks, Papenhuyzen remained a vital component of the Storm's roster, earning 'Back of the Year' honors in 2020, 2021, and 2022. His resilience was evidenced by his ability to return to form, such as scoring four tries in a single game during the 2025 season. Yet, the cumulative toll of the sport eventually took its lead. Following the 2025 Grand Final, where multiple head knocks left him 'rattled,' Papenhuyzen was released by Melbourne on 30 October 2025 to pursue life outside of rugby league, effectively marking the end of a high-impact era.
