Known as the Rocket Man, Ryan Newman survived a terrifying 200 MPH Daytona crash.
In short: Ryan Newman, nicknamed Rocket Man for his record-breaking pole positions, enjoyed a storied NASCAR career spanning over two decades. Beyond his 18 official wins, including the 2008 Daytona 500, he is remembered for his remarkable survival after a violent, fiery collision during the final lap of the 2020 Daytona 500.
Born in 1977, Ryan Newman began his professional stock car journey in 2000 with Penske Racing. He quickly established himself as a formidable qualifier, earning the nickname Rocket Man for his pole-winning prowess. By 2002, he broke rookie records for poles and top-five finishes, narrowly beating Jimmie Johnson for Rookie of the Year honors. His career was marked by intense consistency and occasional controversy, including a 2014 season where he finished second in the championship standings after a tactical move at Phoenix bumped Jeff Gordon from the Chase.
Newman’s career was punctuated by spectacular, high-speed accidents. In 2009, his car flipped and landed on its roof at Talladega, requiring the Jaws of Life for his extraction. However, his most harrowing moment occurred on February 17, 2020. While leading the Daytona 500 on the final lap, contact sent his car into the wall and onto its roof. A second car struck his driver’s side at nearly 200 MPH. Despite the severity of the wreck, which left him unresponsive with a bruised brain, Newman was released from the hospital just two days later, walking unaided.
Throughout his tenure with teams like Stewart–Haas Racing and Richard Childress Racing, Newman remained a persistent competitor. He secured his 18th career victory in 2017 at Phoenix, ending a long winless streak. Following his 2021 season with Roush Fenway Racing, he transitioned away from full-time NASCAR competition. His legacy remains defined by his technical skill, his ability to secure poles, and his miraculous recovery from one of the most violent crashes in modern racing history.
