The heavy price of leadership in the global K-pop industry
In short: Behind the polished choreography of Seventeen’s leader, S.Coups, lies a grueling narrative of physical and mental endurance. From reconstructive knee surgery to managing panic disorder, his journey reveals the intense physical and psychological demands placed on the architects of modern pop.
Choi Seung-cheol, known professionally as S.Coups, has navigated a career defined by both immense achievement and significant physical hardship. Since his 2015 debut with Seventeen, the leader has contributed to over 70 of the group's songs. However, his tenure has been marked by several high-profile medical challenges that forced periods of hiatus from the stage.
In 2019, the pressure of maintaining his role as leader became public when he took a break to manage symptoms of anxiety. He later disclosed in the documentary series SEVENTEEN: OUR CHAPTER that he lives with panic disorder. These mental health struggles were compounded by physical injuries, including a 2021 incident where a fall resulted in shoulder and facial injuries, and a more severe 2023 ACL rupture.
The August 2023 knee injury required complex reconstructive surgery on both his anterior cruciate and anterolateral ligaments. The severity of the injury led to a Grade 5 military classification in South Korea, exempting him from peacetime service. While his return to the stage in March 2024 marked a triumphant moment for fans, his recovery remains an ongoing process of rehabilitation and careful physical management.
Beyond the stage, S.Coups has leveraged his influence for philanthropy, donating tens of millions of won to disaster relief and animal shelters. His career continues to evolve through high-fashion ambassadorships and new musical ventures, such as the 2025 sub-unit CxM, even as he balances the long-term recovery of his physical health.
