The only person to appear in every Love & Hip Hop show
In short: Safaree Samuels built a career on the fringes of hip hop royalty. From being a reluctant hype man for a rising Nicki Minaj to becoming a reality TV staple, his journey explores the complex dynamics of fame, branding, and the thin line between collaboration and controversy.
Safaree Samuels first entered the music scene in the early 2000s as a hype man for the New York group Hoodstars. His inclusion was not unanimous; while he was a high school friend of founder Loustar, other members initially opposed his presence. He was ultimately kept on the team following a recommendation from Loustar's father, Bowlegged Lou of Full Force, who suggested the group needed a hype man. Loustar later noted that Samuels lacked writing talent and primarily functioned by emulating the artists he followed.
His most prominent professional association was with Nicki Minaj, whom he dated from 2003 to 2014. During this decade, he served as her hype man and appeared in her music videos, such as 'Stupid Hoe' in 2012. However, their relationship was marked by significant legal and personal friction. In 2011, a police report was filed after Samuels struck Minaj with a suitcase. By 2016, he attempted to sue her for songwriting credits on 'The Pinkprint,' a claim she denied, alleging instead that he attempted to extort her and profit from her name.
Samuels transitioned into a prolific reality television career, becoming a fixture on VH1's 'Love & Hip Hop' franchise. He achieved a unique distinction by appearing in all four iterations of the show: Hollywood, New York, Atlanta, and Miami. His personal life has been equally public, involving a high-profile marriage to actress Erica Mena, which ended in divorce in 2022 after they had two children. His career evolution reflects a shift from the underground hip hop scene to a multi-platform presence in reality media and independent content creation.
