How a single season shattered USL attendance records and ignited an MLS dream
In short: In 2014, Sacramento Republic FC entered the USL and immediately transformed the landscape of American soccer. By drawing crowds that nearly doubled previous league records, the club proved that professional soccer could thrive in California's capital, sparking a decade-long pursuit of top-flight Major League Soccer status.
The club's arrival in 2014 was marked by immediate, massive scale. Playing their home debut at Hughes Stadium before moving to the soccer-specific Bonney Field, the Republic drew a sellout crowd of 20,231. This single-game attendance nearly doubled the previous USL regular season record of 10,697. By July 27, 2014, the team had broken the USL regular season attendance record, totaling 182,107 fans—a figure significantly higher than the 112,748 previously set by Orlando City SC.
This success fueled an ambitious journey toward Major League Soccer (MLS). In 2017, the club submitted an expansion bid, and by October 21, 2019, MLS officially announced Sacramento would be its 29th team, originally slated for a 2022 start. However, the path was not linear. Following pandemic-related delays, the start date was pushed to 2023, only for the expansion bid to be placed on an indefinite hiatus on February 26, 2021, after lead investor Ron Burkle decided not to acquire the franchise.
Despite the MLS setback, the Republic remains a powerhouse in the USL Championship. They have reached the playoffs eight times and made a historic run in the 2022 U.S. Open Cup, becoming the first team from outside MLS to play for the trophy since 2008. Today, the club is working with the City of Sacramento on a new 20,000-seat stadium in the Railyards urban infill project to continue its ascent.
The club's identity is deeply rooted in California heritage. Their crest features a California grizzly bear—the state's official animal—and a nautical star, both drawn from the Bear Flag. The motto 'Urbs Indomita,' meaning Indomitable City, is featured on their kits, reflecting the spirit of Sacramento.
