From corporate sales to cinematic staple: the evolution of Saiju Kurup

In short: Before he became a recognizable face in Malayalam cinema, Saiju Kurup was an engineer working for Airtel. His transition from a corporate office to the screen highlights a unique path where professional observation eventually fueled a distinctive acting rhythm that helped him carve out a niche in Indian film.

Born in 1979 and raised in Nagpur, Saiju Kurup did not begin his journey in the spotlight. He studied engineering and entered the workforce as a sales representative for Airtel in Thiruvananthapuram. His entry into acting was almost accidental; in 2004, while working at the telecom company, he met singer M. G. Sreekumar. After M. G. Sreekumar, a singer who performed on Mayookham, prompted him to try out, Kurup travelled to Chennai and won his initial starring part within that 2005 movie.

Despite this initial debut, success was not immediate. Kurup resigned from his corporate job about a year and a half after the release of Mayookham but faced limited opportunities for several years. He later reflected that he only truly found his acting rhythm between 2008 and 2012 through films like Mulla and Karmayogi.

During this period, he shifted his approach from playing standard, clean-shaven characters to incorporating real-world observations into his performances. His breakthrough arrived in 2012 with Trivandrum Lodge, where he played the 'raw and real' character Shibu Vellayini. This departure from polished archetypes allowed him to connect more deeply with audiences. Since then, Kurup has balanced leading roles in thrillers like Guardian (2021) and dramas like Porattu Nadakam (2024) with supporting roles that critics describe as 'adhesives' for the storyline. By 2025, he was recognized for building a steady presence by prioritizing resonant performances over chasing stardom.
